Its name originated in 1765 when Lt. Pike - also of Colorado's Pikes Peak exploration - while on an expedition up the Mississippi witnessed Native Americans playing a game with sticks. He called it “Prairie La Crosse.” Visitors to this alluring city of bluffs on the shores of the mighty Mississippi can visit beautiful Riverside Park or see the entire valley from Granddad Bluff. The annual Octoberfest each fall draws thousands of revelers.
